Brokeback Mountain

OK... maybe I'm imagining things, but it appears that Brokeback Mountain played for only one week in madison. It wasn't playing last week and is not playing this week. I don't know what to make of it.

Update: Apparently it never was playing here. It's going to be at least mid january before it arrives here, seemingly. I guess that means I will probably see the new Malick film first. Oh well. That makes Wallace and Gromit more likely to make the top 10 list, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Bonsai!!

Update Jan 27 2006 I have seen two additional films that have made my top 10 list, and Crash is slowly slipping towards the bottom. New list:

  1. Junebug

  2. The Constant Gardener

  3. Syriana

  4. Good Night, and Good Luck

  5. Crash

Well, this camera is starting to make sense. I guess that means I have graduated from "click the silver button to shoot but don't touch anything else" to "I know what the buttons mean but not when to use them". I got a few good shots of chopper (all the shots from yesterday and today are on my shutterfly site). I am liking this new lens more and more.

I got a mini bonsai kit for christmas. The first steps in growing it are indoor near a window, but the next steps involve placing it outdoors. And as per the instructions, this should generally be in summer or spring. Therefore I am unsure what to do with it. Theoretically I could just complete the first step and hope it survives in the window for a while, and if it doesn't, no big loss since it's not too expensive. That seems unusually harsh, though. I am not sure Buddha would approve.

The real question is where I would put it. There is no safe window in the apartment due to feline intrusions. And Audrey likes to chew on green things.

Tonight Lisa and I are going to The Dining Room in Monticello. I'm trying to decide
in advance what I should order, but it's a tough choice. Everything looks good, including the Butternut Squash Risotto, Roast Pork Tenderloin with cherry reduction sauce, and Chicken Breast with succotash and tomatillo salad. And don't get me started on the Desserts or after dinner cheese with 7 year cheddar.

This weekend I must see some movies. Right now my 10 best of 2005 list is lacking.

  1. Junebug (Coming to DVD on Jan 17!)

  2. Crash

  3. Good Night, and Good Luck

  4. Big Gap (These are iffy top 10ers)

  5. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Bear

  6. Me and You and Everyone We Know

  7. The Upside of Anger

  8. Kung Fu Hustle

  9. Batman Begins

  10. Millions

  11. A History of Violence

Ebert lists The Woodsman as a 2005 movie seemingly. IMDB says 2004. If it really is 2005 then it is somewhere around 4-6. I still have not seen: Syriana, Munich, The Squid and the Whale, The Constant Gardener, Nine Lives, Saraband, Lord of War, Hustle & Flow, Capote, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, The New World, North Country, Match Point, or Brokeback Mountain, any of which are potential top 10ers.

Bokeh Boogy

Well the new lens is pretty nice. I can take photos indoors with a lot less blur / darkness during normal indoor lighting conditions. The lens has no zoom so it takes a bit of getting used to in order to figure out how to get the right shot. After maybe 50 cat photos, I decided this lens was worth it.

There's some concept in photography called Bokeh, which refers to the subjective aesthetics of things out of focus. A good lens has good Bokeh. Apparently this El Cheapo lens has bad bokeh. I stared at the photos below for about half an hour and concluded that I don't know anything about photography, but I do like my cat.

Christmas dinner with Bill, Kelly, and
Todd went well. I got some items off my wish list and some seemingly good ones not. Surprisingly, no one gave me a movie. That's for the best, because I got effectively 13 movies for christmas. I've got plenty to keep me busy in that arena. Especially considering 2 of them alone total 8 hours.

Camera obsession

I'm becoming obsessed with my camera. I spend hours each day wondering whether I need to buy various accessories for the camera. Included in the possibilities:

  • Lens Filters. This one is actually consuming a lot of brainpower. Do I need one? Which kind do I need? How much am I willing to spend? Will they actually protect the lens? What if I get a cheaper one?
  • Lenses. This is more of a window shopping situation. Although I did buy one lens which I hope will help me take better photos indoors (see christmas indoor photos for evidence). Some sites provides graphs of the lens's optical qualities. If I don't stop myself soon I might actually come to understand what they mean.
  • Tripods. My current tripod, to put it mildly, sucks. Imagine what it would be like if bill gates were to drive a Pinto. That's kind of the situation here. I paid $10 for it and was not worth it. The thing wobbles and does not have any sort of system for balancing the camera. Although it seems ok when I use the camcorder on it, oddly.

It's getting to the point where I might just carry it around with me all day, give it hugs, and pet it. The number of silly photos of my cats is approaching an astronomical number.

Todd called me at 4pm to ask for my mailing address. We are getting together to exchange christmas gifts at 6pm. I am just noting that here so that my blog entry tomorrow will be even more entertaining.

Let's go back to the camera for a moment. I forgot to mention that I am wondering whether I need an expensive flash. I don't like flashes, and I don't know what I would do with one, but there it is.

Speaking of frivolous purchases, this amazon prime situation is pretty interesting. Either it is the greatest thing since sliced bread or it is evil incarnate. I am ordering lots of things from amazon. I just ordered two $5 polo shirts. I can't decide if belonging to prime is good because I can get anything I want for a low price within 3 days, or if it's bad because I can get anything I want for a low price within 3 days.

Basically, 2 months from now I am going to have amassed a debt that would rival Delta airlines.

Chili, Invoices, etc.

Despite my prediction of burning the building down due to the fire hazard of leaving a crock pot on in my cubicle, the building did in fact survive.

The holiday party was fun and consumed most of the day. There were numerous dishes (second table), so I didn't feel the need to eat my chili at the party. Especially because I thought it was too hot. In true steve fashion, I told everyone it was quite hot, but no one really thought so.

We had a few little games, including a game where you had to guess which obscure fact corresponded to which person. I did poorly, although I was proud to have logically deduced one of the two answers (not including my own clue).

Later on, I did eat an entire bowl of the Chili and it wasn't as bad as I thought. For a while my masculinity was in question, because I got a lot of compliments on the chili and no one seemed to think it was too hot, whereas my two samples seemed to indicate otherwise.

It turns out that it was spicy in the exact right amount. Which means that by the time I was done eating a bowl, I wanted to die. That's about like some of the spicy food I get at viet-thai restaurants here. Which is a lot more tolerable than the spice level where I want to die after taking a single spoonful.

Last night I wrapped lots of presents. Unfortunately, once I was done wrapping Lisa's present (shown fully wrapped), I realized that I probably left the invoice in the box. I also managed to twist the ribbon while wrapping into a mobius strip type situation. We'll see what happens this evening when she opens the gift.

Too many peppers

Today is our holiday party at work, and I will certainly burn the building down one way or another due to my chili.

First off, I've got the crock pot in my cubicle and it's on. A few coworkers I don't know have looked seemingly angrily at it. Sooner or later security will show up to escort me out. If they don't, it will probably result in the building going up in flames.

Then there's the chili itself. It's normally not very spicy at all. I decided to put in some Serrano peppers. Since I have never used serrano peppers, I went by the "hotness scale" at the grocery store, where they didn't seem particularly bad. So I got five of them. You can see where this is going.

Attack of the killer beetles

The story of the digital camera purchase has many elements to it. Previously I have covered the issue of buying an overly expensive camera. Today we will cover a more interesting topic.

You see, the camera came with a photo printer. Being that I had buyer's remorse immediately upon getting home, I decided to justify my purchase by cleaning the den thoroughly and making room for the new printer. We're talking a serious cleaning here, and anyone who knows me knows that serious cleaning is actually toxic to me. So I clean everything up, and then Lisa and I spend the evening in New Glarus and at her mother's. When I arrive at home, I call my brother. While I'm on the phone, Chopper climbs onto my new printer and looks at the wall. It is then that I discover black specks all along the wall.

Further inspection reveals the fact that they are little slug-like insects. Now in a state of panic, I begin an even more thorough cleaning of the room. Before I had moved the litter box, but this time I moved all the furniture and vacuumed every nook and cranny, including the corner (and of course the bugs). I then go online to read about any insects involved with vacuuming. I learn about things called "Carpet Beetles".

The next morning several more show up. I vacuum again. Finally that evening there is no sign of them. Nonetheless both on Sunday and Monday I call the apartment people. I am convinced that it was my poor housekeeping that allowed these foul things to survive in the den.

This morning the exterminators show up. They say that there are several forms of beetle it could be, and it is impossible to tell them apart in their larva stage. He sprays around, and then asks me if I have brought any new boxes into the den recently. I show him the printer box, and he looks inside and says that was probably it. It all makes sense! The bugs seemed to be fanning out in a pattern as if they came from the box (where is that guy from Numbers when you need him).

I start getting ready to throw the box out, when I realize that I have to actually cut the UPC off of it because there are rebates I have to submit. Just two days ago I was cluelessly poking around in the box, and this morning I am now trying to decide where I can buy a hazmat suit in order to even touch the box.

I finally cut the thing up, take it outside, and of course vacuum any place it has touched, and now the waiting game begins.

Of course, I have since done a bit of online reading about these "Warehouse Beetles" (<-- actual photo from my place) and it seems that many places claim that the bug spraying of the room may not be enough, because these nasty beetles can go into some sort of hibernation-like state called diapause for a while. But on the other hand, other sites seem to indicate that the chemical can last up to 30 days and is more than adequate.

If you don't hear from me again, you know that the beetles have gotten me.

Brunch at the usual spot

This morning began in what is becoming the typical sunday morning, with brunch at the Nau-Ti-Gal.

12/17/2005 - New Glarus and the Christmas tree

Yesterday we went to a swiss restaurant in New Glarus.

The food was quite good. We shared an order of Roesti, which must mean "artery clogger" in some other language. It was hash browns filled with cheese.

I ordered a dish called Pastetli, which was veal, chicken, and pork in a creamy wine-mushroom sauce with a pastry puff on top. It was quite good.

After dinner, we looked around new glarus a bit.

Then we went to her mother's house and hung out with her family and the big christmas tree.

9/30/2005 - First Date With Lisa

The last day in september was my first date with Lisa. I was fairly nervous at the time, because I didn't really feel like I had a good first date shirt. I ended up asking for the advice of my friend Jo, by sending her photos of my potential outfits. Ultimately I chose this one. It was fairly well-received, although I later found out that everyone actually preferred a different shirt.

I still like this blue one the best, but others prefer the shirt below.

Stephen gets his very own blog!

I have finally caved in and started a blog. This was all brought on by the frivolous purchase of a digital camera. I went to new york in september of '05 and since then have been thinking of getting a digital camera.

In typical me fashion, I of course could only get an overly machismo camera with an extended penis-like lens. But taking photos with a big camera that costs lots of money is quite satisfying. It even makes the noise that cameras in movies make when models are being photographed.

Stay tuned for lots of photos. For now, settle for my favorite cat photos.
